Back-To-School Supplies

Starting a new school year may be a thrill for many kids. However it can also cause anxiety and stress for many families who struggle to buy the school supplies that their children need. Unfortunately, many kids face the embarrassment of not having the items that their school requires them to provide.

That is why every July and August we appeal to our generous community to purchase and donate pencils, pens, notebook paper, crayons, backpacks and every other necessary item. Generous donors and even stores donate thousands of dollars worth of school supplies every year and enable us to give them out to deserving children. Volunteers fill school backpacks and prepare them for distribution.

In August we begin making appointments so that deserving parents can receive what their children need for a good education.

Thanksgiving Assistance

TThe holidays provide a sense of tradition to many and that is especially true at Thanksgiving. Each year during the Thanksgiving season, The Salvation Army serves meals and food boxes to hundreds of families in need.

Each year we begin taking applications for Thanksgiving food boxes for families of two or more. Applicants need to provide proof of each member of their family. Distribution occurs on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

On Thanksgiving Day we serve a sumptuous dinner between 11:00am and 1:00pm. Our primary goal is to serve those who would otherwise be alone, but everyone is welcome. For many years the meal has been prepared by experienced Navy cooks and served by Navy personnel. Guests are invited to be seated and they will be served by our volunteers. The menu includes turkey, yams, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, coffee and many other traditional foods.

Christmas Assistance

The "miracle" of Christmas is repeated over and over again through the joy of caring and sharing and The Salvation Army endeavors to bring spiritual light and love to those it serves at Christmas so that the real meaning of the season is not forgotten. Among the many and varied services and programs provided by The Salvation Army, those that particularly bring joy at Christmas are the Adopt-a-Family/Senior, Angel Tree and Holiday Food Baskets programs. Together, these programs help to ensure that hundreds of lower-income families in our community have an opportunity to receive gifts, have gifts for their children and funds to purchase food for a Christmas dinner celebration.
